Procedure

If you believe your media device's PCB is faulty, follow these steps:

  1. Purchase this item.
  2. Send your original PCB or, preferably, the entire media device to us at: Donor Drives Repairs 43 Alpha Park, Highland Heights, OH 44143.

About PCB Firmware

Most media devices, including hard drives, solid-state drives (SSDs), USB flash drives, memory cards, and other types of storage media, have a circuit board with ROM, NV-RAM, or a controller chip. This chip contains unique data required to access the device's system area, which we refer to as “PCB Firmware”. Without the correct PCB Firmware, the system area and, consequently, user data cannot be accessed. Therefore, simply swapping the circuit boards will not make a faulty device operational. The PCB Firmware may need to be transferred to a new PCB.

In many cases, the ROM or NV-RAM chip is external and can be physically transferred (soldered) onto a new circuit board. In other cases, the PCB Firmware is located in the controller chip, which requires a professional BGA Rework Station to transfer. Often, the controller chip itself may be faulty, necessitating a new one to be reprogrammed with the correct PCB Firmware. Donor Drives can generate this firmware using the data from the original failed media device.
